The Welsh Academy Writers’ Fair

This Saturday, Cardiff will play host to The Welsh Academy’s first ever Writers’ Fair. Join us for a day full of informative and creative sessions and the chance to meet fellow writers, industry professionals and publishers from Wales.

Whether you are a published writer or have only just started on your literary journey this is your chance to learn more about the industry and to have your say on the real issues affecting writers today. From the future of e-publishing and the art of self-promotion to genre writing and international opportunities, The Welsh Academy’s Writers’ Fair has something for everyone.


Timetable


10am: Doors open

10.30am: Introduction to E-publishing and Digital Futures chaired by poet and professor at
Aberystwyth University, Damian Walford Davies and featuring Claire Houguez, Editor and Marketing officer at Parthian; Elwyn Jones, Director of The Welsh Books Council and Alison John, Producer for Yello Brick, a brand new media company who present playful narratives and events using digital platforms. The panel will discuss ways in which the publishing sector is evolving and expanding through the use of technology, and how writers can use this in their work.

11.30am: Choice of two simultaneous events…

- Genre Writing with science fiction author Jasper Fforde and crime novelist Belinda Bauer.
OR
- Marwolaeth y Siop Lyfrau (The Death of the Book Shop - Welsh Language Event) a panel discussion about the future of the book shop in Wales with Elwyn Jones, Eirian James, Gareth F Williams, and chaired by Catrin Beard.

12.30 - 2pm: Break for lunch and networking


2pm: Choice of two simultaneous events…
- International Opportunities for Writers with Nia Davies from Welsh Literature Exchange and 2012 Wales Book of the Year winning author Jon Gower, who has spent time writing abroad.
OR
- Wicipedia Cymraeg (Welsh Wikipedia - Welsh Language Event) with Carl Morris from Hacio’r Iaith and the author Robin Llwyd ab Owain.

3pm: The Art of Self-Promotion / Y Grefft o Hunan-hyrwyddo (bilingual  event) with author and arts critic Jasper Rees, social media consultant Emma Meese and poet Osian Rhys Jones. Join our panel for an insight into how writers can use the internet and social media as effective tools for self-promotion.

4pm: Choice of two simultaneous events…

- A Novel Pitch - Our panel, featuring Jasper Rees and producer/director and writer Angela Graham will be offering invaluable advice on how to pitch your creative ideas, in person or in writing, to a publisher or agent.
OR
- Golygu Creadigol – y Gyfrinach Fawr (Welsh Language Event) – An insight to creative editing and its importance for the success of the Welsh novel with panellists Bethan Mair Hughes, Alun Jones and Tony Bianchi.

5pm: Readings from eminent Welsh authors Christine James and Jon Gower.


6pm: Members Only Forum with drinks - This hour-long session is an opportunity for Full Members and Fellows to share their thoughts on The Welsh Academy and to find out more about Literature Wales' on-going drive to revitalise the Society for Writers in Wales.
